The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is challenging high school students to design a chair from objects in its collection.The deadline for entries is Feb. 21. The winning design will be announced April 4.

The national competition is being launched in partnership with Target. The retailer will manufacture seven limited-edition chairs. Five will be installed in the recently redesigned Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden of the New York City museum. The winner will be awarded two chairs.

Five finalists and four honorable mentions will be announced on March 5 and their work will be featured in a special online exhibition.

In May, the winner will get to see the prototyping and manufacturing process of his or her design at Target’s headquarters in Minneapolis.
