WASHINGTON — The Donald Trump show came to Capitol Hill Wednesday, as the businessman and Republican presidential candidate brought his celebrity to a rally against the Iran nuclear deal.
Trump’s attendance came after an invitation from an unlikely source: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, one of his rivals for the Republican nomination. The two GOP presidential contenders were flanked by more than a dozen conservatives including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and a handful of lawmakers including GOP Reps. Mark Meadows of North Carolina and David Brat of Virginia.
The rally, held on the same day that Democrat Hillary Clinton gave a speech at the Brookings Institution, thrust the Iran deal into the bloodstream of the campaign. But the protest is unlikely to change much about the deal’s fate. As of Tuesday, 41 Democratic senators had pledged to support the Iran deal. That’s enough to prevent a resolution opposing the agreement from reaching Obama’s desk.
